Keep your immunity up with this delicious smoothie!

I’m a big believer in eating greens 3 times a day and making yourself a smoothie is an easy way to introduce more greens into your diet. If you don’t like to have something cold for breakfast you can always have it in the afternoon or make a smaller one to have along with your normal breakfast. It will give you a big energy boost for the whole day! Greens are high in vitamins C, A, K, E, folate, iron and calcium. They are also full of fibre which help you feel fuller for longer (great for weight loss). Greens boost your immune system as well as improve your heart health, they also contain lutein and zeaxanthin which reduce your risk of cataracts and muscular degeneration. The high vitamin C, A and E content is essential for healthy glowing skin. Spirulina is a type of algae which is high in antioxidants, chlorophyll and vitamins B, beta-carotene and vitamin E. It is also high in minerals such as iron and it has a 60% protein content. Spirulina is great for fatigue and can help protect against viral infections. It is best to use an organic brand. (If you haven’t taken it before then start with a small amount of 1/4 tsp. Avoid if you are allergic to seafood or sea vegetables.)

Recipe (serves 1)

  • 1 cup coconut water

  • 1 cup kale

  • 1- 2 long celery stalks

  • 1 cup baby spinach

  • 1 small lemon, peeled

  • 1 frozen banana

  • 1 apple, core removed
    1/4 - 1 tsp spirulina powder

- Blend all ingredients in a high speed blender. If your blender isn’t so powerful you can swap the celery for
lettuce, watercress or more spinach. Feel free to experiment with different greens and fruits. It’s always good to aim for 3 different greens per smoothie. If you like parsley and coriander you can add them in too.

- To avoid any digestive issues, make sure you chew each mouthful to ensure you activate the digestive
enzyme amylase in the mouth which starts the digestive process. As you feel your energy increase, soon you will be addicted to your daily green smoothie! Enjoy :)
